The Streator Fire Department strives to educate the public on a variety of fire and emergency related subjects.
Fire prevention week is scheduled each year in coordination with the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Each year on the week in which October 9th falls, the fire service commemorates fire prevention by holding events to educate the public. The first Fire Prevention Week was proclaimed by President Calvin Coolidge in 1925. Since then, fire departments across the nation have joined in educating the public on fire prevention.
